D is for Dirk of Deft Displacement

[over the course of the month of April, I shall be posting a topic for each letter of the alphabet, sequentially, for every day of the week except Sunday. Our topic this month? Magical weapons for a B/X campaign. All such weapons are +1 to attack and damage rolls unless, unless specifically noted otherwise. Each of these weapons should be considered unique items]

D is for Dirk of Deft Displacement.

When wielded by an individual bent on murder, this magical dagger makes it extremely difficult for an opponent to defend herself, as it teleports from one hand of the attacker to the other, never allowing its intended target to know from whence the thrust will come (the wielder of the dirk of deft displacement must have a free hand to use this ability). To represent this advantage, the wielder is allowed to re-roll a single failed attack roll every round; if the re-roll also fails, the defender has managed to stave off her attacker for the time being.

If the wielder of the dirk does manage to strike home (i.e. inflicts maximum damage), she may choose to release the dagger, leaving it planted in her opponent. The impaling weapon causes its victim to be distracted (may not cast spells or maintain concentration, and all attack rolls suffer a -2 penalty) until it is removed, which can prove difficult as the dagger moves so that it is always just out of reach of a grasping hand. This causes no additional damage (the wound moves with the dagger...it does not create additional wounds), but it is a nuisance, requiring the assistance of at least one additional companion to remove the cursed weapon.

The dirk may be thrown like a normal dagger, but gives no re-roll for a missed range attack.

A real pain in the...well, wherever it gets stuck in.

    1. @ Tim:

I was inspired by a crappy day and the urge to stab someone. Well, actually, MANY someones.
